Methods to Change Mac Apple ID Password

There are different kinds of methods required for this process. Each of which will be detailed for you below in bits.

Using the Recovery Mode

This Recovery Mode method is quite an efficient option which tends to properly guide you to reset your password on Mac. See steps below:

  1. The first thing to do is to shut down your Mac.
  2. Hold the power button and Command + R to boot Recovery.
  3. When the bar finishes loading, you can then select “Disk Utility” and press Continue.
  4. You then have to choose Utilities and go to “Terminal.”
  5. Tap on “Reset password” and press ‘Return’.
  6. Choose the account to change the User Account.
  7. Then enter a new password and re-enter it into the password fields.
  8. Enter a new password hint related to the password.
  9. Then click “Save.”
  10. A warning will appear that the password has changed, click “OK.”
  11. You’ll now have to click Apple and then shut down the device.
  12. Finally, start up your Mac device and then login with the new password.

Using another Account

Should there be any case where you share your Mac with another person, or probably have another user account you know the password on the Mac, the steps below will help you reset the password.

  1. Click on the Apple logo in the top left and choose “Log out”.
  2. Select the account you know the password to.
  3. Enter the password for that account.
  4. Open the “System Preferences” and locate “Users & Groups”
  5. Scroll to the lock icon in the bottom left corner of the window and click on it.
  6. Then re-enter the password.
  7. Select the account which you have you’ve lost or forgot in the sidebar.
  8. Then click on “Reset Password.”
  9. Insert the new password, and verify Password hint fields.
  10. Click on “Change Password.”
  11. Finally, once the password has been changed, you’ll then log into the account with the new password.

Note: The two methods provided above are quite effective, but should there be a case where you’re still finding it hard to use them both, you’ll then have to consider using another mode.

Using the Target Disk Mode

This method enables you to access the hard drive on your Mac from another Mac. To perform this task, follow the steps below:

  1. The first thing to do is to shut down your Apple Mac
  2. Then connect the Mac to another Mac using a Thunderbolt cable or Firewire cable, and not a USB cable.
  3. After that, you’ll then have to start up your Mac and hold down the “T” key while it boots.
  4. Finally, the Mac in the Target Disk Mode will now appear as a hard drive in the other Mac.
